Since 2013, the oil and gas industry has expressed an interest in leasing 105,000 acres inside or within a mile of what became the Bears Ears National Monument’s eastern boundary. Some of these 88 parcels could be auctioned if President Trump shrinks the monument as recommended by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.
