Inmate placement program

The Utah Department of Corrections has contracted with jails to house state inmates for decades. Currently, about a quarter of the state's prison population of nearly 6,500 inmates is housed in county jails. The arrangement gives inmates access to core treatment, more individualized attention and, often, opportunities for additional education and vocational training. It also allows counties to increase employment and boost the local economy, sheriffs say.
