Ensign Peak Trail

Above Salt Lake City, hikers watch the sunset from Ensign Peak.

With a full moon this week, Ensign Peak is one of the best places to watch the sun set over Antelope Island and moon rise over the Wasatch Mountains. Enjoy the beautiful Salt Lake Valley with your family on a short evening hike. The sun sets around 8:45 pm, so start your hike about 30 minutes before that. With a flashlight in every pack, start hiking the short, steep trail up the ravine from the nature park. Glittering city lights, the sunset and a full moon make this a awesome night hike. Take your time finding your way back in the dark. If you are afraid of the dark, this is a great hike during the day, too. Make sure you're back by 10 p.m. No parking is allowed after that at the trailhead.

Getting there: In Salt Lake City, drive around the capitol on Capitol Boulevard. Turn left at Ensign Vista Drive. Park on Ensign Vista Drive for the nature park trailhead. Note: Alcohol is not allowed at the park.
