Bench Lake - Uinta Mountains

Bench Lake on the Notch Mountain Trail in the Uinta Mountains.

Notch Mountain Trail to Bench Lake is easy and picturesque. However, the only sign at the trailhead is for Bald Mountain Trail. Take a left at the sign for Notch Mountain Trail. The rocky dirt path travels west and northwest. At 0.7 miles, a large boulder field is visible on the right. The trail heads north for a short distance and passes a meadow on the left and then crosses a small, shallow stream. At mile 1.3 the trail hits Clegg Lake. Follow the trail left and make a u-turn around Clegg Lake. Continue northwest. A large felled tree crosses the trail at mile 1.9. A short distance later, on your left, you can see Dean Lake through the trees. At 2.2 miles the path runs into Notch Lake. Continue on past another shallow creek for about a half a mile to Bench Lake. Fees: $6, Horses: Yes

Getting there: From Kamas, take U.S. Highway 150 along Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. Follow the road to mile post 29 to Bald Mountain trail parking lot. The trailhead is 70 miles from Salt Lake City.
