Born Aug. 21, 1927, to G. Spencer and Gladys Condie Monson in Salt Lake City; two brothers and three sisters.

Became president of the church’s Canadian Mission in 1959 at age 31.

Named bishop of west Salt Lake City’s Sixth-Seventh Ward in 1950 at age 22.

Married Frances Beverly Johnson on Oct. 7, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Ordained an apostle in October 1963 at age 36. During his decades of service, he supervised missions and the publication of Mormon scriptures.

Named by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 to the Task Force for Private Sector Initiatives.

Became first counselor to LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley in 1995.

Earned an MBA in 1974 from Brigham Young University.

Joined First Presidency under LDS President Howard W. Hunter in 1994.

Created first stake in communist East Germany in 1982.

Dedicated the Church History Library in downtown Salt Lake City in June 2009, using pulpit from his old Sixth-Seventh Ward chapel.

Saw his wife of 64 years die in May 2013.

Oversaw the implementation in November 2015 of a new policy labeling same-sex LDS couples “apostates” and generally precluding their children from Mormon religious rites until age 18.

Partially broke with the Boys Scouts of America in May 2017 as the faith dropped the Varsity and Venturing programs and worked toward developing a global approach to serve Mormonism’s teenage boys and girls.
