The 23-year-old Utahn left an airfield in Duxford, England, early on July 4, 1944, intending to carry out a fighter strike on a communication outpost in German-occupied France. After being hit by enemy ground fire, Moseley tried to return to England. But his engine seized, and he was forced to bail out near the small town of Hauville, deep in enemy territory.
