Utah wildlife officials' plans to introduce nonnative mountain goats into southern Utah mountain ranges is raising concerns that the state is putting fragile alpine ecosystems at risk for little purpose other than expanding big-game hunting opportunities. The state contends rocky terrain above 9,000 feet could be suitable goat habitat in several ranges, including the Deep Creek, Stansbury, Pahvant, Wasatch Plateau and northern Wasatch mountains.
